First Prize Announced at Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Competition
The Royal Over-Seas League Strings and Keyboard Ensembles Prize, which is now in its 70th year, carries a prize of £10,000.
The Paddington Trio, which is made up of violinist Tuulia Hero, cellist Patrick Moriarty, and pianist Stephanie Tang, was crowned the 2022 winner. The group performed the first movement from Beethoven's Piano Trio No. 5 "Ghost" and the fourth movement from Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2.
The trio was formed in 2020 at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where they are currently studying in the school's Advanced Chamber Music Programme.
The group has already found some competition success both in London and overseas. In 2020, they were the winners of the Chamber Prize in the St James Chamber Music Competition, and the next year, they reached the finals of the Ivan Sutton Award.
In addition, the trio recently took part in the Tallinn International Piano Chamber Music Competition in Estonia, where they placed second and took home the award for the best interpretation of an Estonian work.
The jury was comprised of Carole Presland, Ciaran McCabe, Gavin Henderson CBE, and Geoff Parkin.
The other two groups to reach the finals were the Brompton Quartet and the Heathcliff Trio, who played works by Haydn, Shostakovich, Robert Schumann, and Jennifer Higdon.
