SAD NEWS | ‘Underground Guru’ Violin Teacher Joey Corpus Has Died
Filipino-American violin and viola pedagogue Joey Corpus has passed away - aged 59
Filipino-American violin and viola pedagogue Joey Corpus has passed away - aged 59.
A student of Jascha Brodsky and Orlando Cole and described as an 'underground guru', Mr Corpus taught a sought-after private studio on New York City's upper west side for more than 3 decades - his famed students including Lara St. John and Chuan Yun Lee.
“He was an incredible pedagogue in every way - a patient and perfect teacher," Canadian violin soloist Lara St. John has told The Violin Channel.
“He began violin after the hit and run accident which killed his mother and left him a paraplegic … he was already 14 at the time, but so talented that he taught himself in hospital …. he became a great violinist and teacher, since he knew exactly how to solve problems - having figured it out himself,” she has said.
"There are hundreds of violinists, and some violists and cellists, who were inspired and are still playing because of him … his passing is a huge loss to the music world.”
Our condolences are with Mr Corpus’ family, friends, colleagues and students.
