Violin, Viola & Cello Prizes Awarded at Austria's Brahms International Music Competition

The violin, viola and cello prizes have today been announced at the 2017 Johannes Brahms International Music Competition - in Pörtschach, Austria

The violin, viola and cello prizes have today been announced at the 2017 Johannes Brahms International Music Competition - in Pörtschach, Austria.

In the violin division, 27 year old Daichi Nakamura from Japan has been awarded this year's 1st prize.

A current student of 2017 jury member Michael Frischenschlage at the Vienna University of Music, Daichi is a former prize winner at the Osaka, Khachaturian and Lipizer International Violin Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 17 year old violinist Belle Ting from Canada - and 20 year old violinist Eunche Kim from South Korea.

In the viola division, 14 year old Eunbin Lee from South Korea has been awarded 1st prize.

A student at the Korean National Music Institute for the Gifted, Eunbin is a former prize winner at the Korean National Music Competition, the Han Segye University Music Competition and the Ewha Cultural Competition.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 20 year old violist Ziyu Shen from China - and 18 year old violist Sao Soulez Lariviere from France.

in the cello division, 41 year old Ariel Barnes from Canada was awarded 1st prize.

Ariel has served as Principal Cellist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra since 2013.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 18 year old cellist Erica Piccotti from Italy - and 25 year old cellist Jordan Costard from France.

Each category 1st prize winner will receive EUR 2500.

The 'Vadim Repin Encouragement' prizes were awarded to 23 year old violinist Jaewon Kim from South Korea and 14 year old violinist Rino Yoshimoto from Japan.

This year’s violin jury comprised: Andrej Bielow, Michael Frischenschlager, Alissa Margulis, Orfej Simic and Andreas Vierziger.

This year’s viola jury comprised: Arik Braude, Juan-Miguel Hernandez, Jerzy Kosmala, Ognjan Stanchev and Alexander Zemtsov.

This year’s cello jury comprised: Alexandre Bouzlov, Catalin Ilea, Matthieu Lejeune, Yuki Miyagi, Kyung-Ok Park and Éva Simić-Németh.

Previous Brahms International Music Competition prize winners include: VC Artists Francisco Garcia Fullana, Ioana Cristina Goicea, Lara Boschkor and Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.
