English violin virtuoso Albert Sammons was born on this day in 1886.
Largely a self-taught violinist, he is remembered particularly for his association with Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto in B Minor – a work he championed, recorded twice and performed publicly more than 100 times.
Dying in 1957, he premiered a number of new works including Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Phantasy String Quartet - and Frederick Delius’s Violin Concerto and Violin Sonata.
