Moravian-Jewish violinist and composer Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst died on this day in 1865.
He is remembered as one of the greatest violin virtuosi of all time – often said to have rivaled Paganini.
Ernst's major contributions to the violin repertoire includes: Variations on 'The Last Rose of Summer', 'Der Erlkönig' and Variations on 'Rossini's Opera Themes’.
