Violinist Elly Suh Plays Jörg Widmann’s Etude III
The new video was filmed by Mike Figgis at London's Red Mullet Studios
Violinist Elly Suh has recently released a performance film by the filmmaker Mike Figgis, featuring her performance of Jörg Widmann’s Etude III.
Filmed in 2022 at London’s Red Mullet Studios, the video recording captures Widmann's direction for the work: “frantic agitation, as fast as possible.”
Suh is committed to the audio-visual presentation of classical music, and this is not the first time she has created a video recording of a performance. She is mid-way through her Paganini Vault project, a narrative audio-visual album that will eventually capture each of the composer’s 24 caprices.
Watch the performance below:
Born in Seoul in 1989, Suh entered the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School when she was ten years old. She stayed on for undergraduate and postgraduate study with Robert Mann, Joel Smirnoff, and Sally Thomas, before undertaking further studies at the Manhattan School of Music and the Mozarteum in Salzburg under the guidance of Pierre Amoyal.
Suh won Second Prize at the Naumburg International Violin Competition. She has also won the Grand Prix, Top Prizes, or Special Prizes at more than ten international competitions, including the Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition, Russia (2013), Premio Paganini International Violin Competition, Italy (2015), Michael Hill International Violin Competition, New Zealand (2015), Leipzig International Bach Competition, Germany (2018), and the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, USA (2018), amongst others.
She is a specialist in contemporary music, particularly the works of Mario Davidovsky, Ned Rorem, and Jörg Widmann.
