Violinist Szymon Goldberg Died in 1993
The Polish-born American violinist and conductor passed away at the age of 84
A student of Carl Flesch, Goldberg served as concertmaster of the Dresden Philharmonic and the Berliner Philharmoniker. He also held distinguished teaching positions on faculty at Yale University, The Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.
The rise of the Third Reich forced Goldberg to leave the Berlin Phil in 1934, despite conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler's attempts to safeguard the Jewish members of the orchestra. Thereafter, Goldberg toured Europe with the pianist Lili Kraus and gave his American debut at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1938. Eventually, he became a naturalized American citizen in 1953.
He owned and played the "Baron Vitta" Giuseppe Guarneri (Guarneri del Gesù) violin, and after his death, his widow gifted it to the Library of Congress.
