German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler died on this day in 1954.

Remembered as one of the greatest symphonic and operatic conductors of the 20th Century, he served distinguished conducting positions with the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
