20 year old Veriko Tchumburidze from Georgia/Turkey was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Wieniawski International Violin Competition, in Poznan, Poland.

Joint 2nd prize was awarded to 25 year old VC Young Artist Bomsori Kim from South Korea and 22 year old Seiji Okamoto from Japan.

4th and 5th prizes were awarded to 26 year old Luke Hsu from the United States and 25 year old VC Young Artist Richard Lin from Taiwan/United States.

6th and 7th prizes were awarded to 25 year old Maria Włoszczowska from Poland and 21 year old Ryosuke Suho from Japan.

18 year old VC Young Artist Ayana Tsuji from Japan was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Montreal International Violin Competition, in Montreal, Canada.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 26 year old VC Young Artist Bomsori Kim from South Korea and 17 year old Minami Yoshida from Japan.

20 year old British violist VC Young Artist Timothy Ridout was awarded 1st prize at the 12th Lionel Tertis International Viola Competitionon the Isle of Man.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Manuel Vioque-Judde from France and Wenhong Luo from China.

 

29 year old Belgian double bassist Wies de Boeve was awarded 1st prize in the Double Bass category of the 2016 ARD International Music Competition, in Munich, Germany.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Michael Karg from Germany and Dominik Wagner from Germany/Austria.

In the String Quartet category, 1st prize was awarded to the Arod Quartet from France.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to the Aris Quartet from Germany and the Amabile Quartet from Japan. 

 

2016 Avery Fisher Career Development Grants were awarded to violinists VC Artist Tessa LarkSean Lee and Alexi Kenney, cellist Jay Campbell and pianist George Li.

Four 1st prizes were awarded at the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, in New York - to 26 year old violinist Benjamin Baker from New Zealand, 22 year old double bassist Xavier Foley from the United States, 15 year old pianist Nathan Lee from the United States and 21 year old flautist Anthony Trionfo from the United States.

 

29 year old Mayu Kishima from Japan was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 inaugural Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition, in Shanghai, China.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Sergei Dogadin from Russia and VC Young Artist Sirena Huang from the United States.

4th, 5th and 6th prizes were awarded to Stefan Tarara from Germany, VC Young Artist Richard Lin from Taiwan/United States and Ming Liu from China.

23 year old Andi Zhang from China and 24 year old Yun Tang from China were awarded joint-1st prize at the 2016 Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld International Violin Competition, in Harbin, China.

Joint 2nd prize was awarded to 26 year old VC Young Artist Bomsori Kim from South Korea and 18 year old Yiying Jiang from China.

3rd and 4th prizes were awarded to 21 year old Hannah Cho from the United States and 16 year old Zige Chen from China. 

 

22 year old Christoph Croise from France was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld International Cello Competition, in Harbin, China.

2nd prize was awarded to 22 year old Eunghee Cho from the United States.

Joint-3rd prize was awarded to 16 year old Luca Giovannini from Italy and 27 year old Mo Mo from China.

4th and 5th prizes were awarded to 23 year old Eun Cho from South Korea and 25 year old Minji Kim from South Korea/United States.

 

16 year old Ziyu He from China was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Senior Menuhin Competition, in London.

2nd prize was awarded to 16 year old SongHa Choi from South Korea.

3rd and 4th prizes were awarded to 20 year old Yu-Ting Chen from Taiwan and 20 year old Jeein Kim from South Korea.

 

12 year old VC Rising Star Yesong Sophie Lee from the United States was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Junior Menuhin Competition, in London.

2nd prize was awarded to 13 year old VC Rising Star Kevin Miura from the United States/Japan.

3rd prize was awarded to 15 year old VC Rising Star Johan Dalene from Sweden.

4th and 5th prizes were awarded to 12 year old Na Kyung Kang from South Korea and 15 year old Anne Luisa Kramb from Germany.

American cellist Thomas Mesa was awarded the US $50,000 Senior 1st prize at the 2016 10th Annual Sphinx Competition, in Detroit, USA.

2nd Prize and the 2016 'Audience Prize' was awarded to violinist Annelle Gregory.

3rd and 4th prizes were awarded to cellist Guilherme Nardello Monegatto and violinist Ruben Rengel.

In the 2016 Junior Division, 1st prize was awarded to violinist Maria Sanderson.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to cellist Ifetayo Ali Landing and bassist Nicholas Arredondo.

 

23 year old Gyehee Kim from South Korea was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 George Enescu International Violin Competition, in Romania.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year old Donghyun Kim from South Korea and 29 year old VC Young Artist Erzhan Kulibaev from Kazakhstan. 

 

17 year old American VC Rising Star Zlatomir Fung was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 George Enescu International Cello Competition, in Bucharest, Romania.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 22 year old Anastasia Kobekina from Russia and 22 year old Mon Puo Lee from Spain.

23 year old Ji Yoon Lee from South Korea and 25 year old Liya Petrova from Bulgaria were awarded joint-1st prize at the 2016 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition, in Odense, Denmark.

3rd prize was awarded to 25 year old Luke Hsu from the United States.

 

15 year old VC Rising Star Daniel Lozakovich from Sweden was awarded 1st prize at the inaugural 2016 Vladimir Spivakov International Violin Competition, in Ufa, Russia.

Joint-2nd prize was awarded to 23 year old Agnes Langer from Hungary and 26 year old Mai Suzuki from Japan.

3rd prize was awarded to 22 year old Leonid Zhelezny from Russia.

 

23 year old Ji-Won Song from South Korea was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 9th Leopold Mozart International Violin Competition, in Augsburg, Germany.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year old Ziyu He from China and 23 year old Jae Hyeong Lee from South Korea.

 

The British Broadcasting Corporation announced 6 new additions to the ‘BBC New Generation Artists’ roster – including cellist Andrei Ioniță, violist Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad, the Amatis Piano Trio and the Calidore String Quartet

 

2016 Borletti-Buitoni Trust bursaries and fellowships were awarded to VC Artists Alexandra Conunova and the Danish String Quartet, violists Maria Milstein and Elvind Hotsmark and the Quartetto Lyskamm.

 

25 year old Yoo Na Ha from South Korea was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Mirecourt International Violin Competition – in Mirecourt, France.

2nd prize was awarded to 22 year old Carla Ines Marrero Martinez from Spain.

3rd and 4th prizes were awarded to 24 year old Eimi Wakui from Japan and 15 year old Hana Wakamatsu from Japan. 

 

26 year old Korean-American violinist Elly Suh was awarded 1st prize at the Oleh Krysa International Violin Competition, in Lviv, Ukraine.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 24 year old Eimi Wakui from Japan and 23 year old Meruert Karmenova from Kazakhstan.

Category 1 (14 Years and younger) - 1st Prize: Shihan Wang from China, 2nd Prize: Hana Chang from the United States, 3rd Prize: Marley Erickson from the United States.

Category 2 (15 to 17 years Old) - 1st Prize: Anne Luisa Kramb from Germany, 2nd Prize: Elias David Moncado from Germany, 3rd Prize: Sophia Su from the United States.

Category 3 (18 to 20 years Old) - 1st Prize: VC Young Artist Angela Sin Ying Chan from Hong Kong, 2nd Prize: Sumina Studer from Switzerland, 3rd Prize: Mairéad Hickey from the United States. 

 

22 year old Canadian violinist Blake Pouliot was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Montreal Symphony Orchestra Manulife Strings Competition, in Montreal, Canada.

Joint 2nd prize was awarded to 21 year old violinist Eva Aronian and 19 year old cellist Bryan Cheng.

 

27 year old Japanese violinist Rika Masato was awarded 1st prize at the inaugural Dominique Peccatte International Violin Competition, in Paris.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 18 year old Marie-Astrid Hulot from France and 27 year old Haruka Nagao from Japan.

 

19 year old cellist Daniel Hass from Israel was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 41st Stulberg International String Competition, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 19 year old violinists VC Young Artist Zeyu Victor Li from China and 19 year old Austin Berman from the United States.

 

22 year old cellist Alexander Hersh was awarded 1st prize at the 20th annual Schadt String Competition, in Allentown, USA.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 22 and 24 year old cellists Sujin Lee and Noemie Raymond-Friset.

 

28 year old violinist Xiao Wang from China was awarded 1st prize at the 45th Annual William C. Byrd International Young Artists Competition in Michigan, USA.

2nd prize was awarded to violinist Yuan Tian from China. 

 

24 year old Scottish-born violinist Michael Foyle was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Oskar Back Violin Competition in Utrecht, Holland.

Joint 2nd-prize was awarded to Elise Besemer and Pieter van Loenen.

 

The Japan Arts Association presented 2016 ‘Praemium Imperiale’ Awards to Latvian violin virtuoso Gidon Kremer, architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, painter Cindy Sherman, sculptor Annette Messager and film and theatre Director Martin Scorsese.

 

19 year old Israeli-born Canadian cellist Daniel Hass was awarded the 2016 $25,000 ‘Michael Measures’ Prize.

 

Moldovan-Austrian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Swiss composer Christian Henking, jazz singer Andreas Schaerer and architect, performer and musician Christoph Hess were awarded 2016 Canton of Bern prizes.

 

22 year old Japanese-American violinist Mayumi Kanagawa was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 18th Princess Astrid International Music Competition, in Trondheim, Norway.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 17 year old violinist Ludvig Gudim from Norway and 27 year old violinist VC Young Artist Suyeon Kang from Australia. 

 

25 year old American violinist Luke Hsu was awarded 1st prize at the 41st annual Houston Symphony Orchestra Ima Hogg Competition

2nd prize was awarded to 24 year old American cellist Christine Lee – and 3rd place to 24 year old Chinese pianist Brian Hin.

 

24 year old Australian violinist Emily Sun was awarded the Gold Medal at the 64th Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition, in London.

 

Astral Artists Management announced seven 1st prize winners at the 2016 national auditions - violinist VC Young Artist Timothy Chooi, violinist Katie Hyun, pianist Congcong Chai, pianist Natalia Kazaryan, pianist Zhenni Li, harpist Emily Levin and the Rolston String Quartet.

 

17 year old British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 BBC ‘Young Musician of the Year’ awards – at the Barbican Centre, in London.

 

American cellist Julian Schwarz and Canadian pianist Marika Bournaki were awarded 1st prize at the 2016 ‘Art of the Duo’ Boulder International Chamber Music Competition, in Boulder, Colorado, USA.

 

21 year old Colombian cellist Santiago Canon Valencia was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition, in Morelia, Mexico.

2nd prize was awarded to 26 year old Lev Sivkov from Russia – and joint 3rd prize to 22 year old Christoph Croise from France and 25 year old Christine Lamprea from the United States.

 

23 year old Czech violinist Olga Sroubkova was awarded 1st prize at the 35th 2016 Premio Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition, in Gorizia, Italy.

2nd prize was awarded to Lorenz Chen from Taiwan.

Joint 3rd prize was awarded to James Dong from Australia and Hayato Ishibashi from Japan.

 

19 year old Izak Hudnik from Slovenia and 17 year old Francesco Stefanelli from Italy were awarded joint 1st prize at the 2016 Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition, in Porec, Croatia.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 20 year old Sophia Bacelar from the United States and 20 year old Urban Marinko from Slovenia.

 

22 year old South Korean cellist Taeguk Mun was awarded the US $25,000 2016 Janos Starker Foundation career-development prize. 

 

16 year old Yebin Yoo from South Korea/Australia was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Gisborne International Music Competition, in New Zealand.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year old Oscar Han from Australia and 24 year old Natalia Harvey from Australia. 

 

21 year old Yurina Arai from Japan was awarded 1st prize in the 21 years and under category of the 2016 Grumiaux International Violin Competition, in Namur, Belgium.

2nd prize was awarded to 19 year old Sumina Studer from Switzerland.

Joint 3rd prize was awarded to 18 year old Sarah Jegou from France – and 18 year old Suzanne Durand-Riviera from France.

In the 17 years and under category, joint-1st prize was awarded to 15 year old Emiri Kobayashi from Japan and 15 year old Ilgin Top from Turkey.

In the 13 years and under category, joint-1st prize was awarded to 11 year old Aliaksandra Arbuzava from Belarus and 12 year old Veronika Mona Bogic from Serbia.

In the 10 years and under category, 1st prize was awarded to 9 year old Bade Dustan from Turkey.

 

16 year old Chinese violinist Ziyu He was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 12th International Mozart Competition, in Salzburg, Austria.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 24 year old Thomas Reif from Germany and 27 year old Benjamin Marquise Gilmore from the United States/Netherlands.

 

15 year old Elli Choi from the United States was awarded the ‘Prince Rainier III’ 1st prize at the 2016 Monaco World Music Masters Competition, in Monte Carlo.

 

24 year old Polish violinist Marta Kowalczyk was awarded the 2016 J & A Beare bow prize.

 

In the Novosibirsk International Violin Competition Junior Division, joint 1st prize was awarded to Eduard Kollert and Paloma So.

Joint 2nd prize was awarded to Akbike Algi, Vyatcheslac Ermolaev, JeeYoung Park and Bogdan Tusufhanov.

In the Senior Competition, joint 1st prize was awarded to Elvin Ganiev, Ellinor Melon and Kyoto Ogava.

Joint 2nd prize was awarded to Dennis Gasanov, Eun Che Kim and Veronica Sveshnikov.

 

Greek violin virtuoso Leonidas Kavakos was announced as the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Leonie Sonning Music Foundation Prize.

 

24 year old Belgian violinist Marc Bouchkov was announced the recipient of the 2016 Rheingau Music Festival career development grant.

 

24 year old Spanish cellist VC Artist Pablo Ferrandez was announced as the ‘Young Artist of the Year’ at the annual 2016 International Classical Music Awards – in Kursaal, San Sebastian.

 

77 year old Dutch composer Louis Andriessen was announced as the winner of the 2016 New York Philharmonic US $200,000 Marie-Josée Kravis New Music Prize.

 

37 year old American composer Andrew Norman was announced as the 2017 recipient of the prestigious USD $100,000 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition – for his 45 minute orchestral work ‘Play’.

 

Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Society announced British composer and conductor Sir Peter Maxwell Davies as their annual Gold Medal recipient.

 

The New York-based Calidore String Quartet was awarded the Grand Prize at the inaugural 2016 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition – in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to the Verona Quartet and the Rolston Quartet.

 

The Rolston String Quartet was awarded 1st prize at the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition, in Banff, Canada.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to the Tesla Quartet and the Castilian String Quartet.

 

VC Artists Notos Quartett were awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Almere International Chamber Music Competition, in Almere, Holland. 

 

The Berlin-based Vision String Quartet was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Geneva International String Quartet Competition, in Switzerland.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to the Quatuor Hanson from France and the Abel Quartet from South Korea. 

 

22 year old cellist Christoph Croise from France and 29 year old pianist Oxana Schevehenko from Kazhakstan were awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Salieri-Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition, in Verona, Italy.

2nd prize was awarded to the Ebonit Saxophone Quartet.

Joint-3rd prize was awarded to Duo Sciolto and Duo Sonoro.

 

The Paris-based Akilone String Quartet was awarded 1st prize at the 2016 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, in Bordeaux, France.

2nd prize was awarded to Mettis Quartet, from Lithuania.

 

Lithuanian-German cellist Marius Urba and Russian pianist Vita Kan were awarded 1st prize at the 12th Lyon International Chamber Music Competition, in Lyon, France.

Second prize was awarded to cellist Stanislas Kim and pianist Marie Rosa Günter.

Third prize was awarded to cellist Mikhail Nemtsov and pianist Elena Nemtsova. 

 

35 year old American conductor Karina Canellakis was announced as the recipient of the prestigious US $25,000 2016 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.

 

Tarisio Fine Instruments & Bows Auction House announced the 5 recipients of 2016 Tarisio Trust Young Artist grants:

VC Artist Tessa Lark – to fund a debut recording of Frank Bridge’s Piano Trios.

Canadian cellist Arien Husko – for the development of an interactive concert series providing free performances to children in Philadelphia with autism.

American cellist Michael Kaufman – for the commissioning of five American composers for new Cello Quintet repertoire.

John Mietus & Jonathan Sussman – to aid the development of ‘The String Bank’, a new initiative to collect musicians’ used strings and redistribute them to underprivileged schools

Sonja Schebeck & The Freestyle Orchestra.

 

Chinese maker Yu Huidong was awarded 1st prize in the Modern Violin category of the 2016 Santa Cecilia International Violin Making Competition, in Rome.

Italian maker, Marcello Villa from Cremona was awarded 1st prize in both the Modern Viola and Cello categories.

Swedish maker Jens G Johansson and Italian maker Roberto Muzio were awarded 1st prizes in the Antiqued Violin and Bass categories.

 

South Korean luthier Ji Hwan Park was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2016 Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Making Competition, in Poznan, Poland.

 

Italian-German VC Artist Augustin Hadelich was awarded the ‘Best Classical Instrumental Solo’ accolade at the 2016 Grammy Awards – in Los Angeles.

The ‘Best Opera Recording’ Grammy was awarded to conductor Seiji Ozawa for his Decca release of Ravel’s ‘L’Enfant Et Les Sortilèges’ and ‘Shéhérazade” – with the Saito Kinen Orchestra.

The ‘Classical Producer of the Year’ Grammy was awarded to Judith Sherman – her fourth time honoured with this accolade.

The ‘Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance’ Grammy was awarded to the Chicago-based ensemble, Eighth Blackbird – for their ‘Filament’ release on Cedille Records.

The ‘Best Classical Solo Vocal Album’ was presented to American mezzo-soprano, Joyce DiDonato and pianist Antonio Pappano for “Joyce & Tony – Live From Wigmore Hall” – on the Warner Classics/Parlophone label.

The ‘Best Contemporary Classical Composition’ was awarded to Stephen Paulus for his “Paulus: Prayers & Remembrances” release.

The ‘Best Choral Performance’ was presented to Charles Buffy and the Phoenix Chorale and the Kansas City Chorale for their “Rachmaninoff: All-Night Vigil” release.

 

Warner Classics was announced as the classical music ‘Record Label of the Year’ at the prestigious 2016 Gramophone Awards, in London.

 

VC Artist Vilde Frang was awarded Gramophone’s ‘Concerto Recording of the Year’ accolade – for her 2016 Warner Classics release of the Britten and Korngold Violin Concertos, with conductor James Gaffigan and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony.

Period violinist, Rachel Rodger was awarded the ‘Baroque Instrumental’ category prize – whilst the London’s Guildhall School of Music-based Heath String Quartet received the ‘Chamber Music’ accolade.

The Gramophone ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ was awarded to legendary German singer Christa Ludwig.

Pianist, Daniil Trifonov was awarded ‘2016 Artist of the Year’.

 

American violinist, Joshua Bell was awarded the prestigious 2016 Chicago Institute of Music ‘Dushkin’ Award.
