Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Announces New Faculty Members

Six new faculty members in various disciplines have been appointed to the school over the last two months

Recently, the Indiana University (IU) Jacobs School of Music announced the appointment of Vincent Carbone as its academic specialist and managing director of orchestras and instrumental ensembles, effective as of July 1, 2024.

Carbone was most recently manager of arts center operations at Choate Rosemary Hall, plus worked as a production manager at Yale University. He spent five years as assistant director of artistic programs at Carnegie Hall, and has held positions with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Music of the Baroque, Gilmore International Piano Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.

“Vincent’s extensive experience in orchestra operations, artistic administration and education has exceptionally prepared him to assume this critical role with us, and we eagerly anticipate his arrival at the Jacobs School,” said Dean Abra Bush in the press release

The school’s faculty appointments beginning tenure as of August 1, 2024, include Jacobs School alumnus Andy Miller, who was appointed lecturer in music in percussion. Since 2017, he has served as music director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Dance Department.

“The Jacobs Percussion Department is thrilled to welcome Andy Miller to our faculty this fall,” said Joseph Gramley, department chair. “His appointment accentuates the mission of our vast IU percussion curriculum: one of comprehensiveness, versatility and an eye and ear toward the 21st-century artist/teacher/researcher.

“Dr. Miller’s expertise in the music, dance and culture of the African diaspora will enrich our offerings not only in percussion, but also in jazz studies and Latin American music,” Gramley added. “His work will serve our iconic IU Latin Jazz Ensemble and historic IU Brazilian Ensemble, while supporting our new degree minor in Latin American and Caribbean music. We also will be able to develop new course offerings and performance ensembles based upon his unique and extensive areas of specialization.”

Further, Jennifer Saltzstein and Jacquelyn Sholes were appointed to the school’s musicology faculty. Saltzstein has been professor of musicology at the University of Oklahoma School of Music since 2007. Sholes is currently lecturer in music at the University of Rochester, and will serve as assistant professor of musicology at IU.

“We are delighted to welcome two new faculty members to our ranks this fall,” said Ayana Smith, Musicology Department chair. “Jennifer Saltzstein and Jacquelyn Sholes each bring considerable research and teaching experience to our department, enabling us to expand the depth and breadth of our current offerings.”

Additionally, pianists Dinara Klinton and Chi Ho Han have been appointed to the piano faculty as associate professors of music in piano. Klinton was appointed in early May 2024 and has previously held English faculty appointments at the Royal College of Music and the Yehudi Menuhin School.

“As one of the most vibrant performers and teachers of piano today, Dinara Klinton will offer invaluable insights to our students,” said Dean Abra Bush. “We eagerly anticipate her contributions to the legacy of our piano department and school.”

Han has performed to critical acclaim at the Seoul Arts Center Symphony Festival, Festival Internazionale di Musica da Camera di Cervo and International Klavier-Festival Ruhr, plus collaborated with orchestras, including the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and National Orchestra of Belgium.

“We are delighted to welcome Chi Ho Han to the Jacobs Piano Department,” said department chair Norman Krieger in the press release. “He is an internationally celebrated pianist and teacher who will inspire our students with his meticulous standard of excellence as he sustains the historic legacy of our school.”

“The Jacobs School of Music warmly welcomes Chi Ho Han to our faculty,” added Dean Abra Bush. “Our students will greatly benefit from his prolific real-world experience and the unique perspective he will share.”
