Houston Symphony Welcomes New Assistant Conductor

Yue Bao will assume the role of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation Assistant Conductor

Shanghai-born conductor Yue Bao joined the Houston Symphony as the conducting fellow in the Fall of 2019. She made her subscription debut with the orchestra on their opening night concert of the 2020-21 season, conducting Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila.

Following her debut, Bao continued to perform a series of successful livestream concert performances with the orchestra and was instrumental in leading performances through the pandemic.

Yue Bao is an exciting presence on the podium,” said Houston Symphony Executive Director, CEO, and holder of the Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, John Mangum. “We’re grateful that she was here in Houston to help us make the 2020–2021 Season happen when few American orchestras were able to do so, and we’re so happy and pleased to have an Assistant Conductor whose career is so clearly on the rise.”

With her new position, Bao is projected to lead more education concerts at Jones Hall, return to the podium at Miller Outdoor Theatre, and support conducting Classical Series concerts.

Bao received her Artist Diploma from The Curtis Institute of Music in May 2019 as the Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow, working closely with Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Bao completed her Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting from the Mannes School of Music following Bachelors of Music degrees in orchestral conducting and opera accompanying from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Earlier this past summer, Bao made her Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut at the Ravinia Festival. Her upcoming guest conducting engagements include the Detroit Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, and an opera gala with Spain's Filarmonía Oviedo.
