France's Glanum Festival Appoints New Artistic Director

Violist and conductor Mathieu Herzog will step into the role

The Festival de Glanum à Saint Rémy de Provence, France, recently announced that the violist and conductor Mathieu Herzog will serve as its new Artistic Director. Herzog was previously the violist of Quatuor Ébène, before departing in 2014 to develop his conducting career.

Herzog first appeared at the Glanum Festival in 2023, conducting his ensemble, the Appassionato Orchestra. Now, he will take charge of the entire festival — which will take place between July 18 and 22, 2024.

This year's festival will include an opera-ballet version of Bizet's Carmen by the Julien Lestel Ballet, the sopranos Pretty Yende and Lise Nougier, the Sirba Octet, the Chœur Région Sud conducted by Michel Piquemal, and a return appearance by the Appassionato Orchestra.

In recent seasons, Herzog has made appearances with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Korean Symphony Orchestra, and the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra. He has made discs for labels such as Warner Classics, EMI, SONY, and Deutsche Grammophon.

Herzog has worked with musicians including Semyon Bychkov, Daniel Harding, György Kurtäg, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Menahem Pressler, Alfred Brendel, and Mitsuko Uchida.

Since 2019, Herzog has been the Musical Director of Holland's Blaricum Music Festival, where he also conducts the Blaricum Music Festival Orchestra.
