Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Appoints 2023 Artist-in-Association

Australian violinist Emily Sun will step into the role for the upcoming season

As part of the residency with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO), Sun will perform the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin Violin Concerto — which was written for Sun and commissioned by ASO — with conductor Benjamin Northey.

She will also perform a recital with pianist Andrea Lam in a program including the Australian premiere of Fazil Say’s Violin Sonata No. 2.

Born in 1991, Sun was the 2016 recipient of the Royal Overseas League's Commonwealth Musician of the Year award and won the 2018 ABC Young Performer of the Year competition.

She also received the Tagore Gold Medal in her final year at the Royal College of Music, where she studied with Itzhak Rashkovsky. Prior to this, she completed her undergraduate study with Dr. Robin Wilson at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Sun is also a former prize winner at the Brahms, Yampolsky, and Lipizer international violin competitions — in addition to being a Young Concert Artist for the Tillett Trust, The Worshipful Company of Musicians, and City Music Foundation.

Her upcoming projects include a new concerto commission plus recordings and concerto performances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and London Mozart Players with conductors Vasily Petrenko, Benjamin Northey, and Howard Griffiths.

Sun's solo CD, entitled "Nocturnes," was released on the Australian label ABC Classics/Universal, and was shortlisted for the Best Classical Album at the ARIA Awards.
