Alena Hron Becomes First Woman to Hold Conducting Post in the Czech Republic
A rising conductor and current Taki Alsop Fellow, Hron has been appointed Chief Conductor at the South Czech Philharmonic
Czech conductor Alena Hron has recently been appointed as the new Chief Conductor of the South Czech Philharmonic. In doing so, she becomes the first woman in Czech history to hold such a post.
A major rising talent, Hron has already worked with all the major orchestras of the Czech Republic (Prague Symphony Orchestra, Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, Prague Philharmonia, and the South Bohemian Philharmonic, among others) — and has received further invitations with many of them. In 2023, she also made her debut at the Prague Spring International Festival to critical acclaim.
She is presently completing her master's degree at the Zurich University of the Arts, where her teachers are Johannes Schlaefli and Christoph-Mathias Mueller. Previously, she studied at the Prague Conservatory (Miriam Němcová, Hynek Farkač, Miroslav Košler), the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (Tomáš Koutník, Leoš Svárovský, Zbyněk Müller), and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo (Ole Kristian Ruud, Sigmund Thorp).
She was also co-founder and for a time artistic director of the new music chamber choir Punkt, which has won several awards at prestigious international competitions.
Hron is a 2024 Fellow of the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship, run by Marin Alsop.
