American composer Elliott Carter was born on this day in 1908.

A two time Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr Carter's contributions to the string repertoire includes a violin concerto, cello concerto, cello sonata - and 5 string quartets.

He passed away in 2012 – aged 103.
