Swiss-born American composer Ernest Bloch was born on this day in 1880 – 137 years ago.

Dying in 1959, Mr Bloch was the former Musical Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

His major contributions to the string repertoire include 6 string quartets, a violin concerto, 3 violin sonatas, 'Baal Shem' Suite for Violin and Piano, 'Meditation and Processional' for Viola and Piano, 'Schelomo' for Cello and Orchestra and 3 solo cello sonatas.
