Angela Wee Appointed Principal Associate Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra
The New York-based violinist previously served as the concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra
American violinist Angela Wee will take on the role of Principal Associate Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
"I am still processing the news," Wee told The Violin Channel. "It all happened very quickly because I landed at JFK from Korea on a six-week tour with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle the day right before the audition. The jetlag made me delirious…but maybe in a way it helped!"
"I am beyond excited to start this new chapter," she added.
A New York native, Wee studied at The Juilliard School with Donald Weilerstein and Masao Kawasaki. During her time at the institution, she served as the concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra, and in 2021 received Juilliard's Career Advancement Fellowship Grant.
She is the co-founder of Sana, a violin duo dedicated to performing for communities in need, that partners with organizations throughout New York City to promote awareness around social justice issues.
As a soloist, she has performed with the Navarra Symphony Orchestra, Poznań Symphony Orchestra, Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra, Massapequa Philharmonic, and the New York Chamber Orchestra, among others.
She is a former prizewinner at the Sarasate International Competition in Pamplona, Cooper International Violin Competition, Juilliard Pre-College Concerto Competition, Dorothy DeLay Fellowship Competition, and Klein International Competition. She was also the first prize winner of the 2013 Salomé Chamber Orchestra Competition where she was awarded a Stradivarius to perform in Carnegie Hall.
Alongside her performing career, Wee is also a passionate pedagogue. She is currently assisting her professor at the Juilliard Pre-College.
