Michigan's Ann Arbor Symphony Appoints New Music Director
Following a three-year international search that surveyed 225 different applicants, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (AASO) has found a new Music Director in Earl Lee. The contract is for an initial five-year term starting with the 22-23 season.
Lee is presently Assistant Conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and has also held conducting positions in Toronto and Pittsburgh.
In 2022, Lee received the Georg Solti Conducting Award, becoming the first conductor of Asian descent to win this prize. He also recently made his debut with the New York Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.
Originally a cellist, Lee completed degrees in cello performance at the Curtis Institute and The Juilliard School, then went on to study conducting at the Manhattan School of Music and the New England Conservatory.
Lee's first concert as Music Director is scheduled for September 9, 2022, where he will lead the orchestra in a program of works by Carlos Simon, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff.
"Earl captivated the orchestra, board and audience from his very first baton stroke, and his interactions with all who came in contact with him affirmed this impression," said Carol Sewell, the President of the AASO's Board.
"We’re tremendously excited to be bringing international award-winning talent to Southeastern Michigan’s doorstep and can’t wait to kick off our season opener in September with Earl on the podium."
"When I was in Ann Arbor in April, I had such a wonderful time working with the musicians," said Lee. "A special spark was lit from the very first rehearsal, and I’m so proud of the music we got to share with the community of Ann Arbor in the concert hall."
"Even during the short period of a week spending time with the orchestra, staff and board members, it was clear to me that I wanted to do something here with this group and become a part of this community," he continued. "Thank you so much for your open arms as I join the AASO family, and I look forward to sharing many years of great music together."
