Apollo Chamber Players to Raise Money for the Houston Homeless
Taking place in Houston on December 16, the concert features a range of music from across religious denominations and cultures
The Apollo Chamber Players are presenting a program of holiday music focusing on religious pluralism and cultural harmony. Titled "Holiday Voyage," the free concert invites audience members to donate to Healthcare for the Homeless — Houston (HHH).
The program features a range of music from across religious denominations and cultures, with the composers coming from Jewish, Palestinian, African-American, Brazilian, and Ukrainian faith traditions.
Palestinian-American composer Muyassar Kurdi's work A Lullaby for the Children of the Sun will receive its premiere, while the Kwanzaa Suite of Black composer Brian Nabors will get another outing (it was commissioned and premiered by Apollo in 2021).
The concert also features music by John Cornelius and Isabelle Ganz, along with vocalists Kenneth Gayle, Armando Hernandez, and GRAMMY winner Wayne Ashley.
The concert begins at 7 PM on December 16, 2023, at First Congregational Church Houston.
"Apollo's commitment to honoring and celebrating every culture really speaks to us, and mirrors Healthcare for the Homeless — Houston's mission of treating every patient with health, hope, and dignity," said Paige Taylor, HHH Board Chair for 2023-2024. "Their annual Holiday Voyage program is a beautiful collaboration that has contributed thousands of dollars to help provide health services for some of Houston's most vulnerable and marginalized community members."
