Applications Closing for NY's 2022 "Getting To Carnegie" Cello Competition

Open to cellists of any nationality 18 to 29 years of age, the competition's applications are to be received by December 1, 2021

Applications are now closing for the 8th "Getting To Carnegie" Competition — 2022 Cello Edition.

There is no fee to apply and you can simply submit an existing Youtube or Vimeo file.

In addition to receiving USD $5,000, the winner will be the featured cellist at Carnegie Hall in the 2023 edition of the competition, and at the 19th Water Island Music Festival, in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

Competition founder, 'Pianist With the Hair' Julian Gargiulo and 2019 'Getting to Carnegie' Cello Edition finalists: Sarah Miller, Krystian Chiu, Rachel Siu, and Ben Swartz.

The first round will be judged by a video recording of a freely chosen 3-5 minute work (or part) from the standard cello repertoire.

Four finalists will be chosen by December 15, 2021, to proceed to the Final Round, in which participants will premiere movements of "Elegy in 4" for Cello and Piano by "Pianist With the Hair" Julian Gargiulo.

The Final Round will be in two parts. The first will be at Steinway & Sons in New York and will be live-streamed here on The Violin Channel, and the second will be at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall on January 18, 2022.

Voting will be an equal aggregate of the following: a jury consisting of previous "Getting to Carnegie" winners, the “live” in-person audience at Carnegie Hall, and everyone listening online to the livestream.

CHAI-WON HONG & JULIAN GARGIULO | GARGIULO CELLO SONATA NO. 1 | TANGO | 2016 'GETTING TO CARNEGIE' | 1ST PRIZE

“Getting to Carnegie’s mission remains the same in spite of the global pandemic: raising awareness about Classical Music as something fun and approachable for all ages,” Gargiulo told us.

“If this year's airport restrictions and Covid requirements dissuade you from boarding a flight to New York for the actual show, The Violin Channel will make sure you have 'front row seats' right from your home!”

“We are very excited to hear what the best young cellists of this generation sound like after 18 months of practicing in quarantine,” he added.

In conjunction with The Violin Channel and the Alphadyne Foundation, last year’s competition shifted 100% online, increasing its audience size exponentially. This year’s competition will be both streamed online and enjoyed by a live audience at Carnegie Hall.
