Applications Open for Germany's Stuttgart International Violin Competition

Applications are opening on February 1 for the second edition of the competition — to be held in Stuttgart, Germany from February 19 to 26, 2024

Organized by the Guadagnini Foundation and the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, the Stuttgart International Violin Competition is open to international violinists 28 years of age and younger.

The 2024 competition's prize money is totalling 60,000 Euros. The first prize winner will benefit from a number of important performance engagements, the loan of a 1746 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin, as well as artist management for the three subsequent years.

The 2024 jury will comprise Ingolf Turban (President), Shmuel Ashkenasi, Ulf Wallin, Hagai Shaham, Suyoen Kim, Rudolf Koelman, Dr. Harald Eggebrecht, Josef Rissin, and Stefan Fehlandt.

Opening February 1, all applications are to be received by July 31, 2023.

To apply, an application video may be recorded in three takes. The pieces themselves must contain no cuts and the required repertoire includes:

1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
First Movement and cadenza from one of the following concertos for violin and orchestra:
G major, KV 216
D major, KV 218
A major, KV 219

2. Niccolò Paganini
Two caprices from: 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1
The selection of caprices from the application videos must not be repeated in the first round of the competition.

After the application video, the competition will consist of three rounds. The first two rounds take place with a piano accompaniment, while the final will be accompanied partially by the Lotus Quartett and partially by the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Joseph Bastian.
