Positions Available at North Carolina's Brevard Music Center Summer Institute

Located on the beautiful 180-acre campus in western North Carolina, Brevard's summer training programs will welcome students from early June to early August

The Brevard Music Center Summer Institute & Festival has announced its season highlights, with student applications due February 20, 2024.

Under the artistic direction of Keith Lockhart – Conductor of the Boston Pops and formerly Chief Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London — the Brevard Music Center welcomes more than 500 students every summer to study with a distinguished faculty of over 80 artists.

Open to those ages 14-29, applications will be accepted through February 25 in all string programs and March 15 for piano, jazz, and all other programs.

New this year, the Brevard Music Center has Teaching Assistant positions available for string players aged 21 and up. The Teaching Assistants receive a full tuition waiver in exchange for assisting faculty throughout the summer. There are 3 violin, 2 viola, 1 cello, and 1 bass position available.

Known for its hallmark Orchestral Studies program, Brevard's Summer Institute also offers robust programs in Piano, Composition, and many more.

Depending on the program, students receive private lessons from Brevard's artist faculty, participate in studio classes and masterclasses, get solo and chamber music performance opportunities, and more. Throughout the summer, students have the opportunity to attend on-campus orchestra, chamber, solo, and opera performances.

Interested students for all instruments can learn more and apply at https://www.brevardmusic.org/institute

The High School Division is open to students who are at least 14 by the start date of their program and have not yet completed one year as a full-time college student, while the College Division is for students ages 18 through 29 who will have completed at least one year as a full-time college student by the start date of the program.

Students of this year's Summer Institute will enjoy the new Parker Concert Hall — Brevard's first-ever year-round performance venue overlooking scenic Lake Milner.

Throughout its over 88-year history, the Brevard Music Center has seen many of the world's most famous musicians perform with its student orchestras, including Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Conrad Tao, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Renée Fleming.

In 2024, the legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will be in residence June 24-29 for teaching and performances, including a concert with the Brevard Music Center Orchestra.

In addition, cellist David Finckel, pianist Wu Han, and flutist Claire Chase hold the Thomas C. Bolton Distinguished Artist Chair, a program supported by The Payne Fund. These residencies will include recitals, teaching, seminars, and solo and chamber music masterclasses.

The season will also see the world premieres of Errollyn Wallen's violin concerto with Philippe Quint, and Quinn Mason's piano concerto with Lara Downes.

Audiences and students will enjoy repertoire such as Strauss's Ein Heldenleben, Bruckner’s Symphony. No. 7, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, Copland’s Symphony No. 3, Holst's The Planets, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, Simon’s Profiles, and more. Additional highlights can be found here.

Brevard will welcome conductors Keith Lockhart, Principal Guest Conductor JoAnn Falletta, Resident Conductor Ken Lam, David Greilsammer, André Raphel, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Damon Gupton, Cosette Justo Valdés, and Delta David Gier.
