He came to international attention as a top prizewinner at the 2022 Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann where he was the youngest competitor. Most recently, he joined the roster of Young Concert Artists upon winning the 2023 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions in New York. He was additionally the recipient of The Stern Young Artist Award from the Linda & Isaac Stern Foundation, The Anne & George Popkin Cello Chair, and The Michaels Award for a New York recital, which was subsequently recognized as one of the best NY debuts in 2024 by New York Classical Review.

As a soloist, Benett has appeared with orchestras such as the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, Kammerphilharmonie Metamorphosen Berlin, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy, and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. He has also worked with conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Nicholas Milton, and Joseph Bastian.

Upcoming highlights include the Queensland Symphony Orchestra with Umberto Clerici, and the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra with Elizabeth Schulze.

Born in Sydney, Benett commenced cello studies at the age of five under the guidance of his uncle and teacher, Thomas Tsai. He is currently an undergraduate student of Clive Greensmith at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. In previous years, he also learned with Susan Blake and Li-Wei Qin. His other significant mentors include Ralph Kirshbaum, Steven Isserlis, Alban Gerhardt, and his pianist father, Joshua Tsai.

What are your hobbies outside of music?
Playing tennis, watching films, visiting art galleries, or spending time with family and friends.
If you were not a musician, what profession do you feel you’d be doing now?
It’s hard to imagine, but I could see myself in design or another field that involves creative input. Another possibility is playing tennis competitively, though that seems less likely given the increased physicality of the professional game today!
What would your dream gig be?
Playing a concerto with Carlos Kleiber. Unfortunately, that can only happen in a dream!
What is a song that makes you turn the radio up?
La Vie en Rose – Édith Piaf
What would you say makes you unique as a musician?
What makes me unique is the combination of influences and experiences that have shaped how I engage with music. I believe every musician brings something distinctive, formed by their personality, perspectives, and the environment around them. For me, I strive to remain true to these aspects and combined with a strong commitment to the score, I hope to have something unique to say.
Do you keep all 3 meals phone-free? No social media scrolling.
I often listen to music while eating, which I find relaxing. However, unless I'm with family or friends, you’ll probably find me on my phone reading articles, watching sports highlights, texting or writing emails.
