The 26-year-old Cuban-Chinese-American cello soloist and interdisciplinary artist shatters the norms of what a classically-trained musician is in the 21st-Century.

"A 21st Century Artist Destined to Leave Her Own Very Colorful Mark"

-The Violin Channel

A graduate of The Juilliard School Pre-College, the Conservatoire de Paris and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, where she studied with Minhye Clara Kim, Philippe Muller and Nicolas Altstaedt, Sophia recently received her Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School and Columbia University, in New York City, as a Celia Ascher Full-Scholarship Fellow — studying cello performance at Juilliard with Minhye Clara Kim and film studies at Columbia University.

She also worked in recent years under the mentorship of French cellist Gautier Capuçon as a laureate of the Louis Vuitton Foundation “Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle”. The specialized program allowed her to take part in six public masterclasses and concerts with her mentor — which were broadcast internationally on Medici.tv and Radio France.

What would be your dream gig?
My own one-woman show with all-original music for solo cello and electronics (I’m currently developing this)
What is a song that makes you turn the radio up?
Anything by James Blake, Qveen Herby, or Teyana Taylor (I performed with her this year and she is one of the most powerful voices and personas I’ve ever met- not to mention incredibly sweet inspiring)!
What would you say makes you unique as a musician?
I sometimes feel like I’m a walking dichotomy because there is so much that I do and am that people seem to think is bordering the absurd as a classically trained musician. However, the fact that I am highly committed to martial arts and train Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu regularly seems to always shock people the most.
Do you keep all 3 meals phone free?
One of the areas of personal growth I’ve been working on lately is being more present with both myself and the people around me. After a conversation about this with a close friend, I actually deleted the Instagram app off my phone a few weeks ago and have been dreading the day when I inevitably have to reinstall it. I’m hoping to limit it greatly from my life even when I re-emerge on the socials.
