VC Artist Viano Quartet is one of the most sought-after performing young ensembles today and is currently in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since soaring to international acclaim as the First Prize winner at the 13th Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have traveled to nearly every major city across the globe, captivating audiences in New York, London, Berlin, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Paris, Beijing, Toronto, Lucerne, and Los Angeles.

Upcoming concerts in their 2025 season include return performances in Alice Tully Hall for CMS Lincoln Center as well as appearances at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Music@Menlo, Tippet Rise Art Center, and many more, and will be traveling internationally for performance tours in the UK, Germany, and Hong Kong. They have collaborated with world-class musicians including Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Fleur Barron, James Ehnes, Mahan Esfahani, Marc-André Hamelin, Sir Stephen Hough, Miloš Karadaglić, Bridget Kibbey, Paul Neubauer, David Shifrin, and Elisso Virsaladze. In 2023, they released their first EP Portraits on the Curtis Label, featuring pieces by Schubert, Florence Price, Tchaikovsky, and Ginastera.

In addition to their busy touring schedule, the quartet members are also dedicated advocates of music education and have worked with students at Music@Menlo, SUNY Buffalo, the Colburn Academy, Duke University, University of British Columbia, Northern Michigan University, Utah State University, University of Denver, and Virginia Commonwealth University. This season, they will be returning to the University of Victoria for several weeks of residency which will include performances, masterclasses, and lectures. The quartet has previously held graduate quartet residencies at Curtis and Colburn and was also the Peak Fellowship Quartet-in-Residence at Meadows School of the Arts at SMU.

In their formative years, the quartet sustained unwavering enthusiasm from every international jury, never entering a major competition without capturing a top prize. Before their career-defining achievement at the Banff International String Quartet Competition, they also received major prizes at the Wigmore Hall, Osaka, Fischoff, ENKOR, and Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competitions. Each member of the quartet is grateful for the interminable support from their distinguished mentors at the Curtis Institute and Colburn Conservatory, including members of the Dover, Guarneri, and Tokyo string quartets.

The name “Viano” was created to describe the four individual instruments in a string quartet interacting as one. Each of the four instruments begins with the letter “v,” and like a piano, all four string instruments together play both harmony and melody, creating a unified instrument called the “Viano”

Viano Quartet
What are your hobbies outside of music?
Lucy: Trying out new recipes, exploring different areas of Philadelphia, and watching Korean dramas! Hao: Playing competitive board/video games with friends. Usually with fun cocktails involved. Aiden: Hiking, listening to podcasts, playing puzzle games, and trying to keep my many houseplants alive amidst all our traveling. Tate: I love brewing specialty coffee. I enjoy a good run, especially if there’s a good meal that follows. I’ve always been into classic menswear. I have been told that I dress like a grandpa, and I think that is a great compliment. Grandpas often have the best style.
If you were not a musician, what profession do you feel you’d be doing now?
Hao: I want to say something super cool like ethical hacker or pilot, but I’d more likely be trying to work at a tech startup or hedge fund. Lucy: I’d love to open my own boba/coffee shop or be a fashion photographer!! Aiden: I'd love to be a National Park ranger! Besides that, any job that allows for the flexibility of being a digital nomad– I enjoy exploring new places, and also staying in one place just long enough to have a favorite coffee shop and hiking trail. Tate: As a kid, I always dreamt of playing baseball professionally, but I was not that good. Maybe in sales of some kind — probably selling suits.
What would your dream gig be?
Hao: Gathering every single string player on earth together and playing Schumann’s Happy Farmer in unison, on a broadcast for the whole world. Lucy: A concert tour in Asia with my favorite people and trying amazing food in every city!! Aiden: An annual Halloween performance of Black Angels plus Death and the Maiden (the quartet and then the lied) in a darkened library, or catacombs, or perhaps at an old battleground just as the sun goes down… or playing Beethoven’s Cavatina on the ISS. Tate: It would be cool to have a dinner and wine pairing that goes with a Beethoven quartet cycle. Multiple days, each with several courses, curated by a Michelin star chef. Although, on second thought, maybe I’d prefer to be an audience member for that…
What is a song that makes you turn the radio up?
Hao: High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco Lucy: Levitating by Dua Lipa Aiden: anything Snarky Puppy– does that count? Tate: Just the Two of Us. Bill Withers.
What would you say makes you unique as a musician?
Hao: I like to relax 🛀 Lucy: My shoes :) Also, I sometimes come up with funky fingerings. Aiden: I have this sort of slide-into-base rubato gesture that I thought was just one of many go-to options in my rubato gesture toolkit. Then the sentence ‘have you tried doing an Aiden there?’ happened in rehearsal Tate: I’ve got a mean down bow staccato, but not on cello. Only on violin.
Do you keep all 3 meals phone-free? No social media scrolling.
Hao: I am a MASTER at doom-scrolling but somehow meals do end up phone-free. Not Netflix-free though… Lucy: Generally no phones, but I often panic scroll Netflix to try to find the perfect show before I start eating. Tate: When I am eating with people, yes. Unfortunately, I occasionally doom-scroll when eating alone. That or whatever TV show I am currently watching. Aiden: *looks up from phone* hang on, what was the question again? I swear I only meant to google something related to it…
