Austin Opera Announces New Music Director
American conductor Timothy Myers will step into the role
American conductor Timothy Myers has already worked with the Austin Opera for some time, having been appointed its Artistic Advisor in 2018 and Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor since 2020.
As the new Music Director, Myers will lead all three of Austin Opera’s productions at the Long Center during the 2023/24 season: Leoncavello's Pagliacci, Martínez's Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, and Bizet's Carmen.
Timothy Myers is a protégé of Lorin Maazel, and his operatic engagements have included the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera, Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Atlanta Opera, Spoleto Festival USA, and the Wexford Festival.
He has also made a number of appearances with symphony orchestras, including the American, Beijing NCPA, Chautauqua, Jerusalem, Milwaukee, North Carolina, Portland, Toledo, Tulsa, and Winston-Salem symphony orchestras as well as the Brooklyn, Johannesburg, and Malaysian Philharmonic orchestras.
"It has been tremendously rewarding to work alongside Annie, Nate, Claudia, and the entire Austin Opera staff and board over the past five years as we challenge ourselves to curate seasons that celebrate the classics, share stories that are reflective of the community, and innovate the future of our art form," Myers said.
"I am thrilled to continue that work in this expanded role and to also deepen my relationship with the talented musicians of the Austin Opera Orchestra and Chorus. I believe greatly in the future of Austin Opera and look forward to advancing the company’s place amongst the rich arts and cultural offerings in the growing city of Austin and continuing to support our blossoming as a company with international impact."
"I’m thrilled that Timothy’s role at Austin Opera continues to grow," said Annie Burridge, the General Director and CEO of Austin Opera. "He has been an invaluable partner over the past five years in our work to continuously build the quality and scope of our artistic offerings, and his ingenuity has been such an asset to the Austin Opera team as we chart an exciting future for opera in Austin."
