Baltimore Chamber Orchestra Hires New Music Director

Conductor Robert Moody will assume the role of the 2024/25 season

Robert Moody is currently the principal conductor of Florida’s Lakeland Opera and music director of the Arizona Musicfest and Memphis Symphony. Under his leadership, the latter has seen exponential growth in programming, recording, new commissions, and endowment growth to over $25 million.

He will be joining the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra in the 2024/25 concert season on an initial three-year contract and will continue in all his current conducting roles.

Previously, he was music director for both the Portland (Maine) and Winston-Salem (North Carolina) Symphonies and has held conducting roles with the Phoenix Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, Santa Fe Opera, Brevard Music Center, New York City Youth Orchestra, and Landestheater Linz.

As a guest conductor, Moody has led the Chicago Symphony, L.A. Philharmonic, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and major orchestras of Canada, Colombia, Germany, and South Africa.

He frequently collaborates with leading artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Mason Bates, Kevin Puts, Canadian Brass, Time for Three, among many others. He has made multiple commercial recordings, including Stephenson’s Concerto for Hope with legendary trumpet player Ryan Anthony.

His conducting highlights this season include engagements with top orchestras in South Africa, Shenzhen Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Chattanooga Symphony/Opera, Billings Symphony, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.

A South Carolina native, Moody holds degrees from Furman University and the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Donald Neuen.

“I’m so happy to post this morning that the fine folks at the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra have decided to make me their next Music Director!” Moody posted on Facebook. “I’m very excited to join this team and create incredible music experiences with the truly exceptional musicians there (and to be clear, I’m not leaving Memphis Symphony, Arizona Musicfest, or Lakeland Opera. Just adding some wonderful weeks of music-making on the East Coast to my life). Season Announcement Coming Soon!”
