Louisiana's Baton Rouge Symphony Names New Music Director
After a multi-year search, Canadian conductor Adam Johnson has been selected as the newest conductor
Canadian conductor Adam Johnson succeeded Timothy Muffitt — the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra's long-serving conductor — on July 1, 2023.
Johnson comes to Baton Rouge from a previous role as the resident conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, during which time he presented more than 80 concerts with the orchestra. Previously he had spent two years working with the same ensemble as the Assistant Conductor to Kent Nagano.
Johnson also spent three seasons with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and has appeared with a number of other Canadian ensembles. He holds a doctorate in piano performance from the Université de Montréal.
"I am so excited to be invited to lead the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra as music director," Johnson said. "It’s an exciting moment for me personally to join the community and to work with this orchestra on a regular basis, to really take it to new heights and to create new connections and to deliver powerful performances."
"We are planning an exciting season ahead and it’s wonderful to be able to start to plan long-term as well for some wonderful projects," he added.
