BBC Radio 3 Announces New Generation Artists 2022

Emerging artists from across four continents will join BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme as of September 2022 and will remain on the roster until December 2024.

Launched in 1999, the prestigious program helps to launch the international careers of young musicians, providing them with performance opportunities around the UK — including solo recitals and concerts with the BBC orchestras, and appearances at the BBC Proms, Cheltenham Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, and London’s Wigmore Hall.

The initiative welcomes for the first time in its history an accordionist, Ryan Corbett (Scotland), and a countertenor, Hugh Cutting (England).

Other new members include Colombian cellist and VC Young Artist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, the Berlin-based Leonkoro Quartet, VC Young Artist violinist Geneva Lewis, Scottish jazz pianist Fergus McCreadie, and South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha.

These artists will join those who have been in the program since 2021 and will stay on until December 2023; they include pianist Tom Borrow, mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, VC Young Artist violinist María Dueñas, baritone Konstantin Krimmel, pianist Kunal Lahiry, the Mithras Trio, and singer William Thomas.

“It is a privilege for Radio 3 to be providing performance and broadcast opportunities to young artists as they embark on their international careers,” said Alan Davey, Controller of BBC Radio 3 and Classical Music, in the press release

“This year, we are particularly proud that the New Generation Artists joining the scheme showcase a variety of instruments and voices and come from many corners of the world,” Davey added. “This means that our audiences can experience and discover a variety of music by encountering these inspiring young performers. We hope listeners will enjoy witnessing these young artists as they push boundaries, evolve, and leave their own personal mark on the art of music.”
