Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra Appoints New Concertmaster

Swiss violinist Daniel Nebel will assume the role, effective immediately

After an audition process in October 2022, Swiss violinist Daniel Nebel has been appointed concertmaster of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB). He will join the orchestra’s other concertmaster roles held by Erez Ofer and Rainer Wolters

“I'm very happy to announce that I've been appointed concertmaster of the [RSB]!” Nebel posted on Facebook. “I'm very excited for this new musical chapter of my life and would like to thank family, friends and my teacher Alexander Gilman for all the incredible support during the last years!!”

Born in 1996 in Zurich, Switzerland, Nebel started playing the violin at age five. A graduate of the Zurich Conservatory, he has studied with Boris Kuschnir and Yair Kless. He currently studies at London’s Royal College of Music with Alexander Gilman.

In 2014, he became the youngest prize winner of Italy’s Valsesia Musica International Competition. Additionally, he was a member of the LGT Young Soloists, a string ensemble comprising outstanding emerging artists, led by Gilman.

Nebel has since performed with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Royal Philharmonique de Liège, and the Lithuanian National Philharmonic. In 2020, he released an album on Sony Classical with the London Symphony Orchestra and Baltic Sea Philharmonic with Stravinsky’s and Philip Glass’ violin concertos.

He has also been a guest soloist at renowned festivals, including the Khachaturian Festival, Germany’s Kissinger Sommer, and Mexico’s Morelia Music Festival, and is also a regular performing artist in concerts presented by Switzerland’s Orpheum Foundation.

Nebel plays a 1707 Antonio Stradivari violin, generously on loan from a private sponsor.
