Carnegie Hall Hosts “String Fling” Family Event on November 5

The day will give children and their families access to free live performances and the chance to explore string music from around the world

As part of its “Fall Family Day: String Fling,” Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute invites children aged three to 10 and their families to its Resnick Education Wing on 154 W. 57th Street, for a free daylong open house on November 5, 2022, from 12 PM to 4 PM.

The annual family day involves free, educational, interactive, and musical activities and performances for families. The event returns every concert season with newly created sessions and themes, and this year’s theme is string instruments.

Live performances include Yacouba Sissoko and special guest Marilyn Castillo featuring the kora and other West African string instruments. Afro Brazil Arts will present an interactive capoeira performance and run a hands-on workshop about berimbau — the one-stringed instrument at the core of a traditional Afro-Brazilian art form, the capoiera. Participants can join the capoiera band and play the berimbau, agogos, ganzuás, or pandeiros instruments.

Participants will also have the chance to conduct a mini-performance featuring PUBLIQuartet members violist Nick Revel and cellist Hamilton Berry, who will also lead games and educational activities about different sounds of string instruments.

Additionally, artists Michele Schifferle-Marzulli and Eileen Moran will lead a deep listening experience featuring string and other world instruments, while dance-caller Megan Downes and a string band featuring Kayla Williams, Hilary Hawke, Emily Eagen, and Saskia Lane will play and teach various dances.

Widely accessible, the day is an opportunity for young children to explore their creativity and learn alongside other children and families.

Attendance is free and on a first-come, first-served basis — families can drop by anytime or stay for a session of their choosing.
