Carnegie Hall to Host a Musical Tribute to Saint Mother Teresa
The concert celebrating the late Nobel Peace Prize winner will be held on February 22, 2025
New York City’s Carnegie Hall has announced a new event, “Journey of Faith: A Musical Tribute to Mother Teresa,” to honor the life of Saint Mother Teresa. The event will be held at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium at 8 PM on February 22, 2025.
Performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and conducted by Dante Anzolini, the concert program will involve traditional and contemporary music, including four U.S. premieres by Thoma Gaqi, Genc Tukiçi, Holst, and Anzolini.
The concert will also feature three living American composers with ties to New York City including Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, and Missy Mazzoli.
More works will include Fauré’s Requiem, Bach’s “Ich folge dir gleichfalls mit freudigen Schritten” from St. John Passion, Balfe’s “I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls” from The Bohemian Girl, Vaughan Williams’s “The Call” from Five Mystical Songs, and Franck’s Panis angelicus.
Additionally, soprano Catherine Wethingon and baritone Sean Michael Plumb will join the ensemble in the choral works.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun who influenced many around the world with her generous spirit and love for all. In 1950, she founded “The Missionaries of Charity,” which became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI in 1965.
Acclaimed throughout the world, she received numerous awards for her work including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding, the Balzan Prize, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
“[Mother Teresa’s] example of selfless charity has meaning in our current times,” wrote Carnegie Hall. “The repertoire for this concert is selected to prompt reflection on [her] life of service and to provide inspiration for our individual journeys.”
