Houston Symphony Principal cellist Brinton Averil Smith will this week give only the 2nd performance in history of Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Cello Concerto - more than 80 years after its original debut.
The work was premiered in 1935 by cello virtuoso Gregor Piatigorsky, with conductor Arturo Toscanini and the New York Philharmonic - before falling into immediate obscurity.
