Senior Category Finalists Announced at Netherlands Violin Competition

The Final Round of this year's two senior categories will stream live HERE on The Violin Channel this Saturday, January 29, from 8:00 AM ET

Held every two years, the Netherlands Violin Competition, in Utrecht, Netherlands, aims to develop young violin talents,via four specific age categories, under the age of 26.

The competition is open to Dutch citizens only.

The Finalists in the 14-17-year-old age 'Davina van Wely' category are:

  • Zohra Jongerius (16)

  • Joshua Tavenier (16)

  • Luca van der Waals (15)

 

 

 

 

 

The Finalists in the 18-26-year-old 'Oskar Back' age category are:

  • Emma Roijackers (26)
  • Iris van Nuland (19)
  • Isobel Warmelink (25)

 

 

 

 

Hosted every two years by the Stichting Nederlandse Vioolconcoursen, the Oscar Back top category 1st prize winner will reach receive € 12,000.

All rounds of this year's competition are being streamed live HERE on The Violin Channel and with earlier rounds available now for playback.

For the final round of the 'Davina van Wely' category this year each candidate will present the Weinberg 'Concertino' for Violin and String Orchestra with conductor Karel Venhergot and the Netherlands Youth String Orchestra.

For the final round of the 'Oscar Back' Senior division, each candidate will present a Mozart 'Rondo' with string orchestra plus either the Korngold or Berg Violin Concertos with conductor Bas Wiegers and the Residentie Orchestra.

 

 

 

In the 'Oscar Back' category, the special prize for the best performance of the competition's newly commissioned work, "Suddenly Wobbly" by Martijn Padding, was awarded after the semi-final stage to Emma Roijackers. 

In the 'Davina van Wely' category, the special prize for the best performance of the competition's newly commissioned work, "Riffs" by Joey Roukens, was awarded to Joshua Tavenier.

Previous winners include: Janine Jansen, Liza Ferschtman, Jaap van Zweden, Emmy Verhey, Simone Lamsma, Rosanne Philippens, and Niek Baar.

 

 

The 14-17-year-old age category was adjudicated by Elisabeth Perry (Chair), Maaike Aarts, Cindy Albracht, Sonja van Beek, Bas Treub, and Alessandra Sordo-Sanchez.

The 18-26-year-old age category was adjudicated by Susanne van Els (Chair), Guy Braunstein, Isabelle of Cologne, Maria Milstein, Daniel Rowland, Ed Spaniard, Tjeerd Top Tjeerd Top, and Patty Hamel.
