Cellist Marcia Bookstein has recently stepped down from her tutti role in the San Diego Symphony, having served a monumental tenure of 47 years.
Bookstein studied at both the University of California, Los Angeles, and California State University, Northridge, where she received her BA. She then undertook masterclasses with Gregor Piatigorsky and became principal cello of the Jerusalem Symphony in 1975.
In 1977, she joined the San Diego Symphony and has been a member of the orchestra's cello section ever since. During this time, she played in several chamber music groups, including the Silvergate Ensemble. She has appeared on a number of recordings in addition to performing for children in schools.
In 1984, Bookstein studied with the renowned cellist Jacqueline du Pré.
Alongside her role in the San Diego Symphony, Bookstein also served as a member of the San Diego Opera Orchestra.
"She has a incredible performance history and will greatly be missed on stage," the orchestra wrote on social media. "Thank you, Marcia for your musical talent over the years!"
