Cellist Maxine Neuman has Died, Aged 74
The three-time Grammy winner has passed away after a long battle with cancer
Throughout her career, American cellist Maxine Neuman served as a chamber musician, orchestral member, teacher, and soloist.
Having received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Foundation, and National Endowment for the Arts, Neuman was a founding member of the Claremont Duo, the Crescent String Quartet, the Vermont Cello Quartet, and the Walden Trio.
In the 1980s, she was appointed principal cellist of the Orchestra of St. Luke's and later played in the American Classical Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, and the Westchester Philharmonic.
As a pedagogue, she taught at Bennington College in Vermont, New York’s School for Strings, Williams College, C.W. Post University, and the Hoff-Barthelson Music School.
Her recording credits include releases with Deutsche Grammophon, Columbia, Angel, EMI, Nonesuch, Biddulph, CRI, Orion, Leonarda, Argo, Opus One, SONY/Virgin, AMC, Artek, Vanguard, Musical Heritage, Albany, Northeastern and CBS World Records.
Interested in other genres, Neuman also performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and with the rock band Metallica.
