American cellist Michael Flaksman has passed away – aged 73.

A student of Paul Tortelier, Leonard Rose, Antonio Janigro and Nadia Boulanger, Mr Flaksman was a former prize winner at the Bologna International Cello Competition – and former recipient of a Casals Centenary Award.

He served a long term Professorship on faculty at the University of Mannheim – and was the founder of the Ascoli Piceno Festival, in Italy.

Our condolences are with Mr Flaksman’s family, friends, colleagues and students.
