Cellist Mischa Maisky Returns to Performing After Major Surgery
Maisky will perform with Martha Argerich and Janine Jansen on January 16 in Switzerland
After more than 6 months of rehabilitation after a major surgery, cellist Mischa Maisky has announced his return to performing this month.
The "come back" performance will be on January 16 with pianist Martha Argerich and violinist Janine Jansen at the KKL Lucerne in Switzerland. The program has not yet been announced, but tickets can be found here.

Born in 1948 in Riga, Latvia, Mischa Maisky has the distinction of being the only cellist in the world to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky. In 1965, his debut with the Leningrad Philharmonic earned him the nickname the “Rostropovich of the Future.” Shortly after, he was a prizewinner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and began his studies with Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory. After being imprisoned in a labour camp near Gorky for 18 months in 1970, he emigrated from the USSR.
He has garnered many awards during his illustrious career including the 46th Istanbul Music Festival Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, the title of Honorary Membership of the Royal Academy of Music in 2019, Accademico Onorario of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, and the Honorary Fellow Award of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
Throughout his multiple tours and concert appearances, he has collaborated with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, James Levine, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Kirill Petrenko, Paavo Järvi, and Gustavo Dudamel.
As an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist for more than 30 years, he made over 35 recordings with orchestras such as the Vienna, Berlin and Israel Philharmonics, the London Symphony, L‘Orchestre de Paris, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, among others.
