Cincinnati Symphony Releases Two Recordings with Apple Music

The twin albums mark a fitting end to Louis Langrée's 11-year tenure with the orchestra

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has made two new recordings to be released exclusively on Apple Music. The discs feature David Lang’s man made, a concerto written for the Sō Percussion quartet, and Christopher Rouse’s Symphony No. 6 — which was commissioned by the CSO for its 125th anniversary.

The two albums, available now, are the first recordings the CSO has made since the pandemic, following the orchestra's GRAMMY-nominated album Transatlantic (2019). The recordings also feature Apple Music's spatial audio feature, which offers a 3D listening experience through directional sound.

The recordings also mark the end of conductor Louis Langrée's tenure with the orchestra. He has led the ensemble for 11 years, and during that time has appointed more than a third of the CSO's current players. He also hired its first female concertmaster, Stefani Matsuo, and commissioned the writing of 65 new works.

"Commissioning and championing new music have been a vital part of my musical mission since I first came to Cincinnati, and collaborating with the CSO on our bold and boundary-pushing programming has been one of the great joys of my time here," said Langrée.

"The audience's receptiveness and willingness to follow us on this journey, and the extraordinary performances and recordings that have come out as the result of it, leave a legacy that we can all be proud of — and these two works are no exception. With these recordings, we are breathing new life into this important music."
