Violin virtuoso James Ehnes has today opened a raging debate surrounding the pros and cons of illegal smartphone recording in concert halls

The Canadian-born international soloist, in a Huffington Post blog, relayed a recent experience of performing Brahms Violin Concerto, with a 2nd row patron overtly and unashamedly recording the entire performance

Whilst annoyed, Ehnes freely admits feeling conflicted by the wider issue - pointing out he makes his living from authorised recordings and performance sales, yet can appreciate the PR value platforms such as YouTube can deliver for cultivating new devotees and for potentially perpetuating one's career
