Composer Brian Field to Set Poet Amanda Gorman's Text About Uvalde Shooting

Field will donate all royalties from the work to the gun safety organization, Evertown

Composer Brian Field is set to become the first person to set a text by the poet and activist Amanda Gorman. His work will set Gorman's Hymn for the Hurting, which she wrote in response to the 2022 Uvalde shooting.

Field's large-scale orchestral setting, Everything Hurts, will receive its premiere on October 24 and 25 with the Nashville Symphony, featuring mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges and conductor Christian Reif.

All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the gun safety organization Everytown. This decision is much like Gorman's campaign following the original publication of the poem, in which she raised more than $1 million through her social media channels for the same organization.

Field also has a close connection to the subject matter: he lives just 25 miles from Sandy Hook Elementary School, and at the time of the shooting there, his two sons were of elementary-school age.
