Conductor Christian Thielemann Withdraws from Concerts Due to Surgery
Thielemann has withdrawn from La Scala’s production of “Das Rheingold” due to an upcoming tendon surgery
The German conductor Christian Thielemann has canceled his upcoming concerts, including a project with Milan’s Teatro alla Scala due to a necessary tendon surgery in October, followed by five weeks of rehabilitation.
He was initially set to conduct Wagner’s famed “Das Rheingold” from The Ring Cycle in October and November this year, however the surgery has forced him to suspend all forthcoming performances.
“Das Rheingold” will be staged at La Scala from October 28 to November 10, during which the new production of The Ring Cycle directed by David McVicar, will open.
“Since he is unable to conduct the prologue to the tetralogy, which is characterized as a unified artistic endeavor, Maestro Thielemann has announced his intention to withdraw from the entire project,” La Scala explained on its website.
In Thielemann’s place, the “Das Rheingold” concerts on November 28 and October 31 will be conducted by Simone Young, while those on November 5, 7, and 10, will be led by Alexander Soddy.
Our best wishes to Mr. Thielemann for successful surgery and speedy rehabilitation!
