Conductor Daniel Lipton has Died, Aged 84
Among other companies, Lipton led the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia and Tampa Opera
Born in 1940 in Paris, Daniel Lipton was raised in New York City, where he studied at The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music.
He went on to pursue conducting and was mentored by Nadia Boulanger in Paris on a Fulbright scholarship, as well as with conductor Franco Ferrara in Siena.
Lipton made his conducting debut with Opera Hamilton in 1986 and was appointed Artistic Director for the Opera Hamilton and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra.
After working in Denver, Florence, Houston, and Zurich, he served as chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia from 1975 to 1983, where he founded and led the Ballet National and the Opera de Colombia in Bogotà.
He was also Artistic Director of Opera Ontario and General Music Director of Anhaltisches Theater Dessau in Germany from 1992 to 1995. In 2012, he was appointed chief conductor of the Tampa Opera and began serving as Artistic Director of the Florida Opera Festival.
Additionally, he worked with the Sadler’s Wells and the Philharmonia in London and the Spoleto Festival and was guest conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin for a decade.
