Conductor Miguel Sepúlveda Named Dresdner Philharmonie's Inaugural Runnicles Fellow
The Portuguese conductor will serve as assistant to Sir Donald Runnicles for the next two years
The Dresdner Philharmonie recently announced that the young Portuguese conductor Miguel Sepúlveda will serve as its inaugural Runnicles Fellow. Sepúlveda will serve in the post for two years, working as the assistant to Sir Donald Runnicles in the first year (2024/25) and then conducting concerts in the second (2025/26).
Hailing from Lisbon, Sepúlveda first studied conducting with Jean Marc Burfin, before completing his master's degree at the Royal Northern College of Music — where his teachers were Mark Heron and Clark Rundell. He is the 2022 winner of Portugal’s Prémio Jovens Músicos.
In 2023, Sepúlveda made an appearance at Operafest Lisboa in Puccini's Suor Angelica and made his debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra. A semifinalist at the Malko Conducting Competition in 2024, he was named as one of five designated winners (finalists) at the Rotterdam International Conducting Competition for 2024/25 — which you will be able to watch on The VIolin Channel.
Sepúlveda has conducted the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Manchester Camerata, and has served as assistant to Domingo Hindoyan and Vasily Petrenko at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
"I am excited to have discovered Miguel Sepúlveda, who really impressed the orchestra and me in the auditions," said Sir Donald Runnicles. "I am very much looking forward to accompanying him on his artistic journey."
