The 65-year-old Finnish-born Maestro has led the ensemble since 2013 - including a 16-month lock-out and contractual dispute from October 2012 to February 2014.
“The orchestra is playing at its highest level since I’ve been here … things are going really well … that’s the time to tell people I’m leaving …” Maestro Vänskä has told local media.
“There is no drama behind the announcement … I just want to give the Minnesota Orchestra plenty of time to find a replacement,” he has said.
