Dallas Symphony Orchestra Announces Diversity Fellowship Program

The one-year fellowship affords players the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the orchestra for 25 weeks, as well as a range of other benefits

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO), in Texas, has launched a new Diversity Fellowship, which aims to build a more diverse orchestra that better reflects its community.

The Fellowship is a pre-professional training program for orchestral players from underrepresented populations. Up to three players will be selected for the year-long program, which will see them rehearse and perform with the orchestra for 25 weeks of the year.

Players will be paid at the orchestra's baseline rate, as well as receive benefits. In addition, they will be mentored by a DSO player and will participate in masterclasses, mock auditions, and private lessons. A hotel and travel stipend to cover the costs associated with auditions is also available.

You can download the audition excerpts and apply, here. Applications should be received by May 19, 2023.

"The DSO is taking a proactive step to advance diversity in orchestras," said Kim Noltemy, the DSO's President and CEO. "By providing performance, mentorship and training to musicians from underrepresented communities, we’re not only helping to create a more representative and inclusive orchestra, but we’re also enriching the cultural landscape of our city and beyond."

"Being an orchestral musician requires years of dedicated practice, study and rehearsal as well as a significant investment of time, energy and money," added George Nickson, DSO Principal Percussionist and Chair of the Orchestra Committee.

"Even then, the competition for a limited number of positions is fierce. The DSO is committing wholly to remove barriers for everyone to be part of the global orchestra community. The addition of the Diversity Fellowship Program adds a professional development piece to the current student programs and work within the community to reflect our city."
