Donald Trump Claims He “Could’ve Been a Flutist”

On the first Pod Force One podcast episode, the US President says he showed musical aptitude as a boy and used to play the flute

Newly launched by New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, the Pod Force One podcast sits down with “the most influential disruptors” in Washington each week to discuss power and politics.

As the show’s inaugural guest, Donald Trump revealed that he showed talent in music as a young boy when his parents took him for aptitude testing. He claimed that this podcast was the first time he had been asked about his brief venture into music.

Below is an excerpt of the conversation:

MD: “When you were little, you were found to be a musical genius?”

DT: “That’s right … my father and mother took me to a place, like an aptitude place, to see what I would be good at, what I liked, and what my talent was. At a pretty young age, probably 11 or 12. And I went through this process for a couple of days, and they came up to my father and they said, ‘Your son is brilliant at music. He’d be an incredible musician.’ This is not what my father wanted to hear. [laughs]

“But I do have an ear for music, I think music played a big role. I played great music, people liked the music I played. They’d play a note on a piano and I remember to this day … then they’d play notes later on and they say which is the note we played from one hour ago and I’d like to get it right i guess but that was a long time ago.”

MD: “Did you ever play an instrument?”

DT: “I played, like, for very short periods of time — the flute. Would you believe that? I had flute lessons. It’s the first person that’s ever asked me that question. Yeah, I had a flute. Can you believe it? I could’ve been a flutist. I didn’t particularly like it. It wasn’t for me. And my mother had instructors [for me], an instructor came in to teach me how to play the flute. Can you believe it? Who would think that? An unusual instrument.

MD: “You could maybe still do it.”

DT: “I doubt it. I don't think so … Music has been important. Also, it gives you energy … People that produce good music are really talented in my opinion, it’s not an easy thing to do.”
