The Houston Grand Opera, in Texas, United States, has this week announced the appointment of 37-year-old South Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim as its new Principal Guest Conductor – effective from the commencement of the 2019-2020 season.
A graduate of the Yonsei University and the Stuttgart University of Music, she is a former 1st prize winner at the Jesus Lopez Cobos International Opera Conducting Competition.
Eun Sun has worked previously as an Assistant Conductor at the Teatro Real, in Madrid - and has led productions at the Oper Frankfurt, English National Opera and the Royal Opera Stockholm.
"I'm thrilled to join the Houston Grand Opera as principal guest conductor ... to join such a team is an honour and a pleasure," she has said.
"Eun Sun is a conductor of limitless talent at the outset of an important career," Houston Grand Opera Music Director, Patrick Summers has said.
"I was very impressed with her incredible facility with languages and her ability to communicate with the singers ... both supporting and challenging them - all too-rare qualities in a conductor," he has said.
