Twelve finalists will compete for the €25,000 First Prize

Twelve singers have recently been selected to go through to the finals of the 2023 Queen Elisabeth Competition, which this year, is focusing on the voice.

The selected candidates are as follows:

  • Fleuranne Brockway, mezzo-soprano
  • Daniel Gwon, baritone
  • Floriane Hasler, mezzo-soprano
  • Inho Jeong, bass
  • Taehan Kim, baritone
  • Juliette Mey, mezzo-soprano
  • Julia Muzychenko-Greenhalgh, soprano
  • Anna-Sophie Neher, soprano
  • Carole-Anne Roussel, soprano
  • Sílvia Sequeira, soprano
  • Maria Warenberg, mezzo-soprano
  • Jasmin White, contralto

The first round took place on May 21 and 22, with each singer presenting two selections from opera, oratorio, Lieder, or art songs with piano accompaniment. Then, the 24 semi-finalists each performed a program chosen by the jury from two programs proposed by the candidates.

The final will take place over three days, and each evening, four of the finalists will sing 3-6 pieces of their own choice — as long as one piece is an opera aria and the selection covers at least two languages.

First Prize carries a value of €25,000, while the Second and Third prizes consist of €20,000 and €17,000 respectively.

In 2023, the jury comprises Bernard Foccroulle (chair), June Anderson, Peter de Caluwe, Marc Clémeur, Helmut Deutsch, Serge Dorny, Bernarda Fink, Jonathan Friend, Sumi Jo, Sophie Karthäuser, Sophie de Lint, Bejun Mehta, Patricia Petibon, Christoph Prégardien, José Van Dam, Reinoud Van Mechelen, and Evamaria Wieser.

The Queen Elisabeth Competition has included a category for voice since 1988. Previous winners include Samuel Hasselhorn, Sumi Hwang, and Haeran Hong.
