FLASHBACK FRIDAY | Violinist Mauricio Fuks Performs Paganini's "La Campanella" in 1971

In this 1971 radio broadcast recording, Fuks is joined by pianist Berta Rosenohl-Grinhauz

Mr. Fuks, 80, is a long-serving professor of violin at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and Visiting Professor at the Kronberg Academy.

In 1964, he won first prize at the Young Concert Artists Competition. Following a distinguished international career as concertmaster, chamber musician, and soloist, he now devotes himself entirely to pedagogy.

This week, The Violin Channel released a new episode in the "VC Heroes" series, in which VC Artists meet with their musical heroes to get a better understanding of their life journey and their advice for young musicians.

The episode features Berlin Philharmonic first concertmaster Noah Bendix Balgley interviewing Fuks about his admirable career. 

"I insist, very much, on technical competence," Fuks said. "You can never have enough technique."

However, he acknowledges that technique should always serve the musical purpose. Fuks explained that even "the word technique came from the old greek work tekhne, which means art."

"Rather than a scale or exercise, you'll make the most progress in your playing by satisfying your emotional artistic needs."
